I stare at the screen
Longing for a new design
My mind is a blank.
- Designer's Block Haiku
Creative blocks happen to the best of us. Whether they're caused by external stress or just plain loss of inspiration, creative blocks can be very frustrating. That said, when you feel an episode of Zazzler's block coming on, the best way to overcome it is to do something completely different. Recently in the forum, several Sellers have been discussing what they do to get over creative blocks. This week, we'd like to share a few of our favorite responses:
Design something for a holiday that is coming up.
Look through Zazzle's categories, and create something for one that you haven't made any products for yet.
Visit a library or museum; look closely at things that you would normally walk past.
Actually pick up a pencil and paper and DRAW something.
Web surf - I use the web to learn or refresh my memory about all kinds of subjects - from art history to finding out what the color and fashion trends are.
I promote others when I'm stuck and hope to be able to get back to creating without too much of a gap.
Put images that I've already uploaded on newer (unused) products.
Do something that I don't enjoy. Seriously, the option of cleaning / decorating / shopping / laundry really can force you to get creative again.
I go through old drawings that I did before I had a computer and look for ideas that I've forgotten or would like to expand upon.
Create another store with a different niche.
Seems like if I grab my camera and shoot anything, anywhere, it always works for me.
Every once in a while I work on my blogs.
My cure for today: Go out to lunch!
Next time that you're struggling with a creative block, try one of the suggestions above - or try them all! Eventually, you'll find a trick that works for you.
